The National Bureau of Standards [now known as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)] disseminates the unit of mass and the unit of length to the states and to science and industry through distributions of standards and standard measuring equipment to the states and through periodic calibrations of state and industrial standards.
The Office of Weights and Measures at NIST also trains technicians from the states, from industry, and from other government agencies in the procedures of laboratory metrology to ensure the traceability of working measurement standards to national and international measurement standards.
Since 1905, NBS/NIST has sponsored the National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM).
