Half-Bushel, missing ground glass cover

 ca. 1832-1891  NIST Museum Collection
Capacity standards were manufactured by the mechanics and laborers employed at the Office of Weights and Measures (OWM). OWM made half-bushels for distribution to the states and custom-houses as dry-measure capacity standards and gallons, half-gallons, quarts, pints, and half-pints for distribution as liquid-measure capacity standards. The half-bushels were of heavy brass construction and about 18 cm high by 37 cm in diameter with walls a little less than 1 cm in thickness. Rings were provided near the top for carrying the measures. The liquid measure standards were also of brass, and each had a decorative handle.
