Patten Vernier Compass

ca. 1813-1833  Loaned by Ferdinand R. Hassler, V, Ardoth A. Hassler, and Linda Hassler Reynolds
Hassler purchased this compass from Richard Patten, a navigational instrument-maker and dealer who kept a shop on Water Street in New York City. The compass is called a vernier compass because it has a vernier mechanism to adjust for magnetic variation. The original compass sights were missing when the instrument was received from the Hassler family, and the NIST Fabrication Technology Division reconstructed these parts.
