This diagram appeared in an 1857 report from the Secretary of the Treasury to the Senate, detailing the progress that had been made up to that point in the work of the Office of Weights and Measures (OWM). OWM recommended that a fireproof room in the state house be provided by states that wished to receive balances. For its part, OWM provided these states with a drawing of such a room.
