Krypton-86 Lamp

 1960  NIST Museum Collection
Between 1960 and 1983, the meter was defined in terms of the monochromatic light emitted by electrically excited atoms of the gas krypton-86. The krypton-86 is immersed in liquid nitrogen and its light output is used in an interferometer to measure length.
