This is a schematic diagram of the NBS conveyer-belt card sorting machine. Each card is accompanied by a binary escort memory. The escort memory is a set of nylon cams (8 in the model). Each cam can have two positions: one indicating a "zero" and the other indicating a "one". Thus with 8 such cams, any binary number from 0 to 11111111 (or a decimal 0 to 256) can be set.
