Punchcard Sorter

photo of punchcard sorter

This punchcard sorter shows address cams and switches. As the cams travel with the cards, they are "read" by wire switches and electrical circuits so when a particular card reaches the intended receptacle, the cams operate pre-set switches and a solenoid opens the track and the card drops into the receptacle.

If one wanted to sort cards into 1000 pockets, one would need 10 cams in each escort memory device.

The invention is covered by U.S. Patent No. 2,961,093. It shows a demonstration model that used 12 receptacles, but it used eight digit cams and recognition switches so 256 sortations could be achieved.
